Man at Sea left a big impression on us. While featuring his previous single ‘Richard Feynman’ a while ago, we proudly declared: “After listening to the project for only a few seconds, we felt an immense sense of comfort and acceptance”. That’s because the English troubadour has an insanely good, warm voice, and the most stunning songwriting flair. On that premise, we are excited to welcome the project back into the global limelight, with Man at Sea presenting his latest EP, ‘In The Light of A Dying Star’.
In it, the keen listener will be able to celebrate everything that makes the Bristol-based creative such a unique artistic specimen. Perhaps the expansive, evocative arrangement, balanced between alt-folk and chamber pop. Or, the incredibly vocal harmonies layered with an emotional string section (courtesy of Brookspeare String Quartet). Truthfully, ‘In The Light of A Dying Star’ is not a record that needs to be described; rather, it needs to be experienced, breathing in all of the comforting energy it has to offer.
The title track is one of our favourite pieces: a slow-burn ballad that raises the intensity as it goes along. Eventually, it all explodes into an expressive concoction of piano and strings, well complementing Man at Sea’s elegant and raw vocal tone. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, he explains: “This record gives a true snapshot of where I am musically at the moment. This year I have gone back to where I started, crafting melody-led songs at the piano that combine the deeply personal with the universal.”
