A rowdy, fierce and euphoric offering, ‘The Laboratory’ is everything one could expect from a band called Replaced By Robots. Their artistic ethos is rather strong, operating into an eerie, melancholic and futuristic field yet maintaining a distinctively retro flair. Encompassing pop-punk, new wave and goth stylings, ‘The Laboratory’ might be a short record – clocking in at one minute and 56 seconds – but it’s memorable and pungent, a nugget of excitement and rebellion.
Heather Joy Morgan, David Goolkasian and Adam Wade are the talented musicians behind the project, sharing a history of shared groups (the likes of Lovesick and The Texas Governor). This showcases the acute creative force behind Replaced By Robots; there’s constant, relentless artistic research behind their premise, as one can easily observe in ‘The Laboratory’. Yet, even with such meaningful and precise lyricism, the song manages to still sound turbulent and uplifting.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, the band explains: “We were composing the soundtrack to our inevitable replacement by robots.” Hear us out: we might be walking into a catastrophe, the world might be ending… but at least we have bloody good music to soundtrack it!
