The keen reader might remember Frech rocker Skycall. Writing about ‘Are You Ready Now’ earlier this year, we celebrated the record as a “psychedelic and soul-stirring trip that echoes the spirit of classic rock legends”. We stand by our words, and truly, that’s the whole ethos behind the project. Headed by Fabrice Duval, Skycall is for now a solo endeavour, with the group having split up not long ago.
‘Stop Living With Closed Eyes’ is the French troubadour’s latest effort, a slice of shiny old-school rock charisma and hard-hitting guitar tones, all packaged together into a fierce, energetic package. Next to that, we find Duval’s modern, relevant lyricism, a look at the chaotic situation our world is currently entangled in. The contrast between familiar and traditional rock matter and rebellious, empowering songwriting makes for a rich and vibrant listening experience.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Skycall explains: “The starting idea was this thought of Gandhi: if the power of love could replace the love of power, humanity would have accomplished its revolution. However, it must be recognized that we are still far from this ideal, and that our world is governed by money, the supreme value that has replaced all spiritual values”.
