I feel like in Europe we often forget how big the US is. I say that because the number of talented bands and musicians coming from there it’s absolutely mindblowing. The latest addition to our mental pool of favourite American acts takes the name of Modern Folklore. Emerging from the so-called American Heartland, the group calls South Dakota their home, championing a quiet, sleazy rock imprint borrowed from the 60s and 70s classics to create a style that favours lyrical poignancy over convoluted guitar solos.
Are they ‘pop’? Well, in the ‘popular’ sense, perhaps yes. Their music is intelligible and friendly to the listeners, who will lose themselves in the band’s sincere storytelling and slow-tempo gems. It’s accessible rock, remember The Beatles or The Pixies?
‘Vol.1’ is Modern Folklore’s latest record. Released earlier this year, the EP marks their second effort to date, featuring 4 tracks that powerfully showcase the group’s luscious musical style, while exploring doubts and challenges about the pandemic we all just went through. Opener ‘The Pain Is A Gift (Quarantine Song)’ channels our collective lockdown frustrations, borrowing instrumental tones from folk and country. We are back in classic rock fashion with ‘Sidewalks’, marking the end of the mellow section of the record. ‘Silent Tongue’ and ‘Manchild’ offers grittier guitars and southern rock vibes.
