“All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here in my arms”. Come on, tell me you haven’t woken up with those lyrics in your head before? Just me? Alright, maybe I’m showing my age, but those lyrics are timeless”.
Please forgive my digression, and allow me to introduce you to Shervin Boloorian, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and sound healer born in Iran, raised in the UK, and now based in Bali. Last month, Shervin teamed up with Grammy Award-winning producer Mark Eldridge (Gary Numan, Sting) to concoct a version of Depeche Mode’s classic ‘Enjoy The Silence’, and the result is magical.
Changing the time signature and melody of the original, Shervin and Mark bravely craft a reimagination that honours the original while inviting listeners into a new sonic space. Delicate, cinematic, and with a Gospel-inspired backbone, their cover turns the iconic tune into a soulful, almost meditative experience.
As for why Boloorian decided to cover ‘Enjoy The Silence’, he says that “listening to this song and the whole album (Violator) on repeat provided some strange comfort. They are favourites of mine because of the poetic power of their lyrics and their musical talents”.
