A stunning slice of evocative pop-rock, ‘Souvenirs’ throws it back to the stadium rock of the 90s and early ‘2000s, packing anthemic choruses and malleable vocals. Penned by Portland-based songwriter Mike Collins under the moniker Rooftop Screamers, the track sounds extremely high-level, with a crystal-clear, lush production and impressive musicianship.
Such a statement is not hard to believe at all, once one considers the big name involved. Looking for collaborators, Collins enlists the help of vocalist and guitarist Randy McStine (Porcupine Tree, among others), lending his stunning and evocative vocals to the cause. Mark Plati is instead on production duties, carrying all the weight of his eye-catching client list (The Cure, Robbie Williams and many more).
From a sonic standpoint, ‘Souvenirs’ doesn’t reinvent the wheels, instead focusing on a widely appealing pop-rock livery, very relatable and alluring. Lyrically, Collins is keen on showcasing his nuanced writing, something he’s very successful at. Speaking about the inspiration behind it, he explains: “It deals with the loss of a loved one (in this case my Grandmother) and is a testament to her memory and her legacy.”
