Broadening my musical palette is ‘Dark Horse’, the eclectic and immersive new single from New Mexico-based electronic producer Alex Simon, better known by his moniker Tone Ranger. With British performance artist and songwriter Evelyn Drach jumping in on vocals, Alex concocts a dreamy and ethereal soundscape for her voice to float over gently. Deeply hypnotic and infused with spaghetti western guitar work sprinkled throughout, ‘Dark Horse’ takes the listener straight to the desert. Sand, sun, stars, and oases.
Since Alex’s debut EP as Tone Ranger was released in 2018, he’s become one of the most highly sought-after electronic acts emerging from the Southwest. He’s opened for icons like Orbital and Thievery Corporation and recently played Burning Man too.
Inspired to travel to remote landscapes and compose music that’s “in conversation with the land”, Tone Ranger crafts lush soundscapes that mirror the open horizons and untamed environment of his travels. Fun fact: much of his first album was composed while living in National Parks in a van.
