Ever since I discovered the work of Ludovico Einaudi, I’ve been hopelessly obsessed with minimalist and neoclassic music. It speaks directly to the soul and stirs up emotions more than any other genre I’ve encountered.
John C Buttigieg, a British-Maltese pianist and composer renowned for his cinematic approach, strives to push the boundaries of these genres, and his 2022 release ‘Piano Odyssey’ does exactly that! Inviting listeners into an ethereal and otherworldly setting, Johns offers up six immersive and spine-shivering tunes. Beautifully delicate, hauntingly poignant, and utterly captivating, the EP draws you into moments of quiet reflection and gently tugs at memories you didn’t know were waiting to surface.
‘Close Call’ begins proceedings and sets the scene gorgeously before the soul-stirring sounds of ‘Journeying Across A Mist’ are introduced. ‘Energy Revived’ is another deeply emotional piece of music that makes the mind wander, and ‘Waiting For A Clue’ is a track that could easily slide into the soundtrack of a show like Broadchurch.
‘Tension In The Air’ and ‘An Unexpected Turn’ complete ‘Piano Odyssey’, two songs I shall leave you to discover for yourself. All I’ll say is that John’s EP is profoundly moving, and I can’t wait to explore his discography further.
