An eclectic and playful mix of musical influences, LP7 sees Belgian artist lyra messier unveiling her latest album, in a move that celebrates the young creative as a trailblazing artist; an explorer not afraid to delve into the unknown. Focusing on lyricism that’s highly relevant to today’s reality – from social media to society and individualism – the record is not only bold in its overall message but also vibrant and expansive in its sonic character.
Take for instance ‘Doomscroll’ – a single that already saw the light of day earlier this year. A dark, cosmic blend of trance and techno with charming spoken words and rap on top of it. Describing the harmful sensation of getting lost in a toxic social media addiction, the track functions as a powerful counterpart to other moments of the album, for instance, the rock-tinged ‘Ashkelon’, drenched in Hebrew motifs and influences.
‘Treinsample’, sung in Dutch, provides a nuanced example of Lyra’s hip-hop prowess, here declined into a modern, forward-thinking livery. There’s a certain ‘internet music’ energy, meaning the song (and the wider record) is fully immersed in the fragmented and leftfield youth landscape. Speaking about the making of the record, messier explains: “I wanted to go in a different direction, as I felt I had already reached the apex of my previous electro-prog sound. As such I decided to incorporate hip hop”.
