Daffodildos Reclaim their Punk Throne in ‘Not My Cup of Tea’

Quirky, playful, yet punchy and hard-hitting, ‘Not My Cup of Tea’ is exactly the type of electrifying and raucous record we would expect from Daffodildos. Based in Brighton, the talented Queer-punk trio has created quite a name for themselves, gracing stages all around the UK. We suspect that live shows are their natural habitat, and perhaps the place where one can truly get a glimpse of the band’s charisma and musical prowess.

Nevertheless, ‘Not My Cup of Tea’ still delivers tons of character and unapologetic lyricism, bringing a breath of fresh air to a genre that too often is stuck in the past. Coincidentally,  the EP’s opener ‘Stuck in ‘77’ addresses exactly that, with Daffodildos reclaiming their non-stereotypical punk identity. Lyricism and values aside, the group still provides what the word ‘punk’ suggests: an endless stream of gritty guitars and chaotic drum grooves.

Emily Flea’s rebellious vocals are a perfect match for such a strong record, blending youth energy with meaningful lyricism, in a sense masking important messages behind a carefree livery. Kudos to you, Daffodildos: old punk heads might be quick to criticise you, but isn’t that what the genre is about? Pissing off older generations and reclaiming space? Mission accomplished!
