It’s not easy to re-imagine a famous song; it’s perhaps a harder process than writing from scratch, due to the artist having to separate the original idea associated with the record and letting it then bloom into something new. Well, Vienna-based trio Lucy Dreams certainly got the memo, embarking into a stunning rendition of Arctic Monkeys’ global hit ‘Do I Wanna Know?’.
Leaving behind indie guitar riffs and raucous vocals, Lucy Dreams gift the song a cinematic and anthemic livery, transforming it into an expansive and evocative jewel that wraps the listeners into a cathartic, meaningful listening experience. It’s interesting how the lyrics take on another meaning, once the sonic goalpost shifts. Suddenly, ‘Do I Wanna Know?’ is a decisively melancholic piece.
The record aims to celebrate Sheffield, where the trio recently performed. Furthermore, Lucy Dreams just smashed a ten-date tour in Canada, and were awarded the XA Award at the Waves Festival, in Vienna. Speaking about the single, they explain: “You just build up a relationship with a city, and with Sheffield it’s a super exciting relationship. Then the idea came up to cover a song by a local band to put this special relationship with the city to music.”
