If Gilles Peterson introduces you as “an artist I’ve fallen in love with”, chances are your music is pretty great. After having listened to Rosie Frater-Taylor’s latest effort, a charming and eclectic cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’, we can confirm that’s exactly what’s happening. A rising force in the British jazz scene, Frater-Taylor has built an impressive following in just a few years, using her soulful vocals and intricate arrangements as an irresistible value proposition.
Reminiscent of the likes of Gretchen Parlato and Nai Palm, among others, Rosie delves into what’s usually referred to as contemporary jazz, a melting pot of influences and references containing a high level of technical and soloing prowess. In the case of Frater-Taylor, she also manages to build a relevant lyrical universe, taking her material to a potentially wider public.
The wonderful ‘Running Up That Hill’ rendition follows up from the British songstress’ latest album ‘Featherweight’, certainly worth a listen (or a million). Speaking about her homage to Kate Bush, she explains: “I was a Kate Bush latecomer and failed to get on board until the whole Stranger Things renaissance a while back. I couldn’t stop singing the song after watching the show.”
