There’s not much we know about (((S)))). It is a project covered in mystery, apparently flourishing on the ‘cold and windy streets of Copenhagen’. There are indeed merits in keeping one’s identity secretive. For the artist, it allows him/her to be creative without fear of reprisals or spotlights. For us listeners, it makes us focus on the music, a value that’s often forgotten nowadays – just the music.
(((S)))) can boast a long discography, having debuted far back in 2008. We were all still in high school, while our Danish hero was recording post-punk delicacy on an album called ‘Ghost’. Fast forward to today, and he’s (we do know he’s a he) once again back with another full-length record, drawing inspiration from those early works: ‘Maverick’.
There’s a lot to unpack in ‘Maverick’. For starters, let’s contextualise it. You can expect a hybrid between post-punk sensibilities and new wave tones, although the material’s general pensive and poignant nature makes it feel more like darkwave. In any case, retro vibes are in order, with electric guitars smelling of 80s lusciousness and vocals sounding ethereal, floaty, almost sharing a shoegaze character.
Our favourite must be ‘Dreams Die, But You Don’t’, an anthem to the infallibility of our experiences. A mid-ballad, the track also contains a certain spaghetti-western quality. If eclecticism is your thing, you might enjoy instead ‘Summer/Winter’, a more mellow and kaleidoscopic offering.
Overall, a fantastic record by a mysterious yet extremely talented artist. Recommended!
