About ‘Triumph’, we are instantly told that “it isn’t your typical Techno/Trance project”. We certainly agree: while the sonic references are certainly drenched in spacious, expansive electronica and old-school rave energy, the album also doesn’t refrain from touching mellower territories, transcending into downtempo from time to time.
Or – to the opposite side – ‘Triumph’ might embark on a little leftfield journey. The title track is a pretty good example of that, featuring a dazzling arpeggio blinking an eye to the likes of Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. ‘Summertime’ follows on the same theme, showcasing George Bolton’s minimal flair. The Boston-based creative is more prolific elsewhere, for instance in the soulful gem ‘Glorious’.
Overall, the BPMs are slower, and ethereal vocal samples help make the record a more universal offering. It all works, signalling Bolton’s evolution from young back in the rave scene to a mature, nuanced artist. As he explains: “I’ve been trying to revisit my Techno/Trance years and absorb the changes that have transpired in the scene”.
