Revisit the Heyday of 90s Britpop with Giant Killers’ ‘Around the Blocks’

Earlier this year, an album called ‘Songs for the Small Places’ came across my proverbial desk. Courtesy of Brighton-based indie-pop act Giant Killers, the ten-track offering was one that I instantly fell in love with.

The backstory to the record is a rather remarkable one, but we’ll leave that for another day. Opening the album was a tune called ‘Around the Blocks,’ a song that instantly plunges the listener into the heyday of 90s Britpop, and today I’d like to dive a little deeper into the infectious track.

Expertly pieced together and featuring one of the most memorable choruses around, ‘Around the Blocks’ is an upbeat little number that is just perfect in every way. Jamie Wortley’s vocal performance is that of a seasoned pro, and the bass work of Michael Brown brings a level of depth and richness to proceedings that elevate the entire track.

Described by the duo as “our love song to the kind of communities we grew up in and that shaped our outlook,” ‘Around the Blocks’ is an opus to the overlooked. A tune for those whose endeavours are more likely to fail because of their circumstances, yet they press on regardless.

Serious tune alert! Enjoy ‘Around the Blocks’ on Spotify now:
