Scottish bands seem to have mastered the art of writing hazy, spacious indie tunes, often garnished with a hint of new wave energy. Annie and the Jays confirm it, presenting a single that’s evocative, nostalgic and incredibly vibrant, ‘If You Wanted To You Would’. Hailing from Edinburgh, the group is capable of seamlessly blending the old and the new, crafting a frankly timeless record with relatable storytelling and a catchy chorus.
Speaking of the chorus, it reminds us of Swedish outfit Morabeza Tobacco, with their lo-fi-infused saturation and raw vocals. Annie and the Jays find their strength into vaporous guitar tones and the addition of 80s synths sounds, taking ‘If You Wanted To You Would’ to more eclectic territories. Featuring lead vocalist and songwriter Annie, the project completes its talented lineup with her brother and drummer George, guitarist Roddy and bassist Ben.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, the band explain: “It simultaneously conveys the excitement of attraction and the angst of unknown reciprocation. We made the song feel like summer, sparks, and anticipation on a dusk road trip.”
