We enjoyed listening to ‘A & B Sides, Vol. Two’. Containing singles ‘Hotshot’ and ‘Salt’, the record is inherently nostalgic, throwing us back to the glorious era of the late 90s. Perhaps is not intentional, and at the end of the day this is certainly a modern work, but yes, there’s a strong flavour of new wave and punk that’s incredibly hypnotising and melancholic. Good for us, as we sure do love everything new wave and more.
‘Hotshot’ is rather evocative, almost shoegaze, thanks to its spacious and luscious guitar tones. ‘Salt’ is decisively more rebellious and chaotic, more on the punk side of things. Both tracks benefit from lead singer Sophia Prise’s authoritative and anthemic vocal tone, malleable and nuanced, yet intense. Guitarist Ian Dowd, drummer Chad Roxxit and Izzy The Gent on bass complete a talented lineup that takes the name of Everything but the Everything.
Produced by Rex Shelverton, ‘A & B Sides Vol. Two’ is definitely worth a listen – or a thousand. We suspect that mature rock aficionados will perhaps be the record’s most valuable target. As the group explains: “We took a year off and we are back with new material.”
