Raw, gritty, and deeply compelling is how I would best describe ‘SL EP1’, the debut EP from Merseyside-based singer/songwriter Shaun Lewis. An all-out rock ‘n’ roll extravaganza spanning four hard-hitting tunes, Shaun’s influences are simple; life, love, hurt, and hope.
“There is a lack of rock ‘n’ roll music releases,” says the artist. “And a distinct lack of bands or similar material in the charts”. He’s right. Rock seems to have sadly taken a backseat over the last decade or so, and Lewis is determined to right that wrong.
‘Not Your Lover’ kicks things off in an electrifying fashion. No holds barred and filled with searing guitar riffs, it delivers a powerful introduction to the musician’s dynamic sound. ‘Atomic Heart’ then steps up to the plate with an equally ferocious approach and reminds me, at least instrumentally, of early Arctic Monkeys – an association I make with great consideration, given the high bar set by the Sheffield heavyweights.
‘Because Of You’ is described by the artist as “probably the closest to a love song I have written,” before we end with a little stick of dynamite in the form of ‘To The Beat’. A stellar first offering from a musician I cannot wait to hear more from!
