As far as hip-hop records go, ‘The 27th Letter’ is certainly fierce and striking. It might be true that the genre nowadays has expanded into thousands of subsections, but overall it’s always refreshing hearing material that’s somewhat loyal to the great boom-bap tradition. That’s exactly what the EP achieves – built over old-school beats and organic samples, ‘The 27th Letter’ blends eclectic arrangements with Cachia’s impressive vocal flow, pretty obscure and melancholic.
Hailing from Canada, Chris Cachia has been rapping for a long time, although he took a break from 2007 to 2015. The aforementioned EP celebrates his permanent return to the music scene, following up on previous efforts such as 2022’s ‘Persona’ and 2020’s ‘My Re:Collection’. ‘The 27th Letter’ reiterates Cachia’s talent in a pretty big fashion: we are big fans of tracks such as ‘Above and Below’. Built on funky drums and minimal textures, it brings us back to the playful G-Funk era. Of course, Cachia utilizes a much deeper and gloomy lyrical outlook, making for a meaningful record. Shout out to producer Charlie McEvoy too.
Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘The 27th Letter’, he explains: “Creativity can be used as means to both address mental health concerns and issues of social injustice”.
