For some, music is a mere exercise in style, a showcase of their techniques and embellishments. For others, it is instead a tool for expression, a medium through which is possible to reverse inner thoughts, challenges, and wishes. For Canadian folk outfit Justpeoplewatching, music meant the ability to raise awareness around mental health issues, while mentoring young people in becoming original artists. Championed by head honcho and founder Marc Ferreira, the project debuted back in 2020, and has since released four singles, with ‘King of Nothing’ being their latest offering.
It is a really good track. Introduced by a charming acoustic guitar, we are instantly pushed into a mid-tempo, poignant earworm, wrapping us into his intense storytelling. Making its way into this slice of sonic goodness, we find Ferreira’s vocals, light, expressive and capable of drawing a mental picture of the project’s dazzling artistic universe. Occasional harmonies (by collaborator Kira Dawson) enrich what is already a gorgeous arrangement, showcasing the cure of details Justpeoplewatching put into their music. Not to mention the songwriting: an array of positively charged melodies line up for verse and choruses, giving listeners a sense of hope in an already chaotic world.
Overall, a lovely release from Justpeoplewatching. They might only be releasing one or two tracks per year, but it is certainly worth it. Every record is placed in a very precise sonic space, with very precise meaning. It’s music we can rely on, it’s music we can trust. Recommended!
