Boasting flamboyant aesthetics and a free-form, kaleidoscopic musical style, British singer and songwriter Debbie vanBo is perhaps one of the most peculiar artists we have come across this year. And that’s a compliment – we believe that in an oversaturated world, artists have a duty to explore beneath the beaten path, building a sound and an identity that makes them instantly recognizable. Debbie vanBo has done exactly that, both with music and imagery.
Following up from last year’s debut ‘Evil Man’, a psych-pop, hillbilly gem, vanBo returns this week with ‘One Way Love’, a tune that certainly features more electronic references than its predecessor. What’s changed though, it’s the theme. If previously Debbie was an unconventional, fierce cowboy-style warrior, she’s now an otherworldly, charming alien, reclaiming her space and taking back control.
It is quite hard to describe ‘One Way Love’. Navigating various realms of electronica, the record feels leftfield and eclectic, while possessing a friendly quality, a dancy immediacy that takes us back to the golden era of classic house. The percussions in the beginning, together with the incredible vocal sample characterize the song as a funky, slightly breakbeat tune, before Debbie shuffles the cards and blends in synthesisers and deep beats. Describing her creative process, she explains: “I’ll sample from just about anything; bhangra, children’s audiobooks from the 70’s, a whisk – whatever I need to fill the space….”.
We’ll gladly follow the British talent’s unique musical journey. Will you?
