Shoegaze Wonder Girl Joyce Tratnyek Returns With ‘Do You Think Of Me’

We had already featured Joyce Tratnyek on our pages, thanks to ‘Listening Listening’, a slow-tempo, avantgarde-flavoured gem that really impressed us at the time, showcasing the NYC-based talent as a unique artist, pursuing her own path with success. On this premise, we were eager to find out what the next chapter for Tratnyek would be. Well, we got our answer now: ‘Do You Think of Me?’ is Joyce’s latest record, and as predicted, it does not disappoint. This time around she explores punchier, heavier lands, providing a track that’s for sure more upbeat, but nonetheless still pensive, haunting and bone-chilling.

Yes bone-chilling, although in a comforting, exciting way. You see, there is this strong shoegaze element in Tratnyek’s music: every sound has its dedicated poignancy, and every note is drenched in heavy effects: for instance, the guitars are not just distorted, but also quite lo-fi, resulting in a dark, monotone sound that conveys so well the project’s general aesthetic.

What about the vocals? The 19-year-old possesses a unique way of delivering his lyrics, dancing around a small registry of notes, with repetitive energy and with a colourless, dull tone. This monochrome attitude reflects the song’s lyricism perfectly, focusing on the painful feeling of missing someone who doesn’t miss you back. Blended all together, her sonic formula is one of the freshest things we have heard in a while. Of course, it is not for everyone. But if you are into it, you are going to love it.

Thanks, Joyce. You keep our passion for music discovery alive.
