The Hinterland Shares Vibrant, Dark Gem ‘Bullet Proof’

We approached ‘Bullet Proof’ with an open mind; mostly trying to strip it from its context, really wanting to get a feel for The Hinterland’s nuanced and emotional artistry. What we found was a deeply nostalgic, poignant gem with a certain pathos and drama to it. Almost writing from a cinematic perspective, the London-based group manages to pack their sonic character with unconscious storytelling, something that showcases their great musical prowess.

Built over an impressive orchestral pop character, ‘Bullet Proof’ feels intense and charismatic, really supercharging The Hinterlands’ affinity for mellow piano melodies, wide textures and polite guitars. Crowning it all, we find Dominic Bailey’s stunning vocals, quite malleable and luscious (there’s a certain Matt Bellamy influence in there…). Completing the lineup we find Oliver Bailey and Cristian Mansilla.

Lyrically, ‘Bullet Proof’ is as dark as its sonic counterpart. Delving into the gloomy water of a troubled relationship, the song “tells of the aftermath of a difficult, manipulative relationship and a desire to take back emotional control” – as The Hinterland explain.
