Shawna Virago Shares Americana Record ‘Blood in Her Dreams’

There are a few layers we can peel off ‘Blood in Her Dreams’. First, there’s the purely musical one; built over Country and Americana stylings, the record is as legendary and evocative as it could be, with a strong emphasis on a retro sonic production and vibrant, malleable vocals. Then, there’s the layer concerning Shawna Virago, the talented songstress behind the album.

Belonging to the first wave of trans artists to play an active role in the industry, Virago is often seen as a pioneer, a boundary-breaking creative entity always authentic to her inner self. We are told that ‘Blood in Her Dreams’ could be described as “TransAmericana”, a definition that certainly fits the projects, hopefully inspiring young trans people into conquering more traditional musical genres.

Featuring eleven offerings, ‘Blood in Her Dreams’ jumps from blues-laced roots Americana (such as ‘Highroad No.6) to punchier anthems (such as ‘Somewhere On The Border’), passing through short forays into punkier stuff (The Barman’s Daughter). There’s something for everyone in it, making for an album that’s authentic, eclectic and always convincing.
