Hailing from Leeds, about-faces are one of the brightest promises in the British indie landscape. Having left their mark with a series of singles last year, the group now returns with a nuanced, evocative offering, ‘Learn to Surf’, a track that is intense and poignant in its instrumental stylings as it is meaningful in its lyricism.
Writing about about-faces in the past, we proudly declared: “Not just guitar-powered indie stylings, but a more complex and nuanced sonic panorama, a push towards eclecticism that’s plenty emotional and inclusive”. We stand by our words: ‘Learn to Surf’ showcases exactly that, finding its electrifying, emotional energy in sharp guitar riffs and angular drum grooves.
The alchemy between Ludman and Capstick’s vocals is absolutely striking, creating a layer of vocal harmonies that set the band apart from the rest of the indie scene – there’s something unique about them. Speaking about the song, frontman Senne Ludman explains: “‘Learn to Surf’ seemed to be a message to myself, but in fact it’s an empowering message to anyone that needs it, a phrase that symbolises one of the most important values in life, ‘perseverance’.”
