I have enjoyed ‘First Light’ the way one should: in silence, alone, reflecting on my past. Sure, it’s perhaps a bit cliché, but hear me out: the EP is so poignant and vibrant that it makes it impossible for the listeners to remain neutral. A slice of nostalgic elegance and melancholic intensity, the record showcases Lost//Youth’s nuanced artistry; built on a charming alt-folk and indie-pop formula, it weaves in and out of emotional acoustic sections and heavier, more anthemic full-band hooks.
The result is, as one would expect, absolutely beautiful. Throughout four tracks and one short interlude, ‘First Light’ deals with themes of loss, love and self-discovery, all delivered through honest and fragile lyricism. Alanna Joy’s lead vocals are the perfect match for such a meaningful musical outlook, indulging in evocative tones and soulful melodies.
I am aware that Lost//Youth will not necessarily cater to everyone’s taste; their music is crepuscular and decisively moody – it’s also comforting and cathartic though, and that’s where I think they’ll connect with a wide audience out there. In such tumultuous times, we need art to ground us. The South Africa-based outfit does exactly that, and incredibly well.
