James Arenas Delves Into His Colombian Roots in ‘Caminante’

‘Caminante’ is a rather hypnotising offering. Blending classic Colombian stylings with Western references, the track wraps the listeners into a soothing, slow-paced musical whirlwind that’s packed with psych character and overwhelming intensity. It’s sort of indescribable, better experienced in real life.

While the record shows its true colours in the outro – very hazy, obscure and spacious – ‘Caminante’ starts with more regular rhythms, channelling Cumbia-like laidback grooves that reek of Latin catharsis, evoking a sparse, arid landscape and the hardships that such an environment invites.

Penned by Queens, New York-based James Arenas, the song is some of the quirkiest offerings we have heard in a while, and we are here for it! Born from Colombian parents, Arenas explores his roots only to strike artistic gold. Teaming up with Colombian rapper ÄX, the pair eventually packs ‘Caminante’ with strong pathos and unwavering charisma.
