Raw, gritty and energetic, ‘Sensational Freak’ doesn’t leave any room for imagination, indulging in retro rock stylings and fuzzy, angular distortion. Waving in and out of cleaner sections and harder-hitting ones, the track is also evidence of Mad Jaiba’s impressive musicianship, perfectly at home in such heavy rock settings as they are in lighter funky territories.
But enough instrumental talk; ‘Sensational Freak’ especially flourishes on its complex lyrical context, something the band seems to be particularly proud of. They should, as such songwriting commitment make sure their music is not only flashy and malleable but also meaningful and relatable, all crucial qualities for audience retention.
Focusing on the rise of parasocial relationships in the post-pandemic landscape, Mad Jaiba are a vocal critic of the system, highlighting the issues within it. Based in Mexico, the group shares ‘Sensational Freak’ as their debut single. Based on what we heard, there’s a lot of potential to build a bigger profile – we’ll be following them closely for the rest of the year.
