The keen reader might remember About Gorillas and Vampires, German pop duo with a knack for retro synthesisers and catchy melodies. Debuting earlier this year with ‘Small Town Blues’, the pair has proudly showcased material built over the course of a decade, experimenting in their home studio while pursuing their romantic relationship. Now husband and wife, About Gorillas and Vampires drive a mysterious aesthetic, keeping their identities secret by wearing LCD masks. Now, their identities might be secret, but their style and attitude are crystal clear, boasting talent and musical attitudes that have impressed us from the beginning.
Following up on their previous single ‘Working Like a Robot’, the project has now released a remix version of ‘Small Town Blues’ by Solid Mitch. The record takes the song to more contemporary settings, balancing a TR-808 drum machine against sweeping synths. It’s this simplicity, this functional minimalism that greatly enhanced the vocal’s lyrical impact. We can now fully appreciate the magnitude of About Gorillas and Vampires’ lead vocals: an expressive, sultry tone pairing well with their metaphorical lyricism, transporting the listeners to an alternative universe where we do actually feel the blues (emotionally at least), but it’s also relaxing and rewarding at the same time.
This could be a winning formula for the German talents, slowly building up a keen audience. Well, we’ll be here supporting. Will you?
