Soothing and poignant, ‘Soft Shoe’ is a bit of a masterpiece, in our opinion. Built on alt-folk stylings, the song is the latest effort by Canadian songstress Mallory Chipman. Exploring the relationship with her own grandmother, affected by Alzheimer’s disease, the Edmonton-based talent jumps into nostalgic territories, highlighting the challenges behind living with a loved one whose memory has waned.
Such fragile and honest lyricism is met by a phenomenal arrangement, light and measured, perfectly supporting Chipman’s evocative and cathartic vocals. A great record from a project with a lot of potential. Look out for future releases – Mallory will be unveiling a single per month until her album ‘Songs To A Wild God’, out in summer 2024.
