Every now and then you come across an artist that slots into your heart almost instantly. Their music hits all the right spots and you wonder to yourself “how didn’t I hear of this person before?”. Adam Ragsdale is one of those artists for me. Drawing his sonic influences from films set in outer space, such as Interstellar (Christopher Nolan), The First Man (Damien Chazelle) and Ad Astra (James Gray), ‘Moon, Part One’ is the first half of an emotionally epic but honest 20-track album.
‘Moon, Part One’ draws you in from the very start, clearly placing you in a universe of stars and infinite space with soaring string arrangements and organic keys, occasionally throwing in 80’s rhythmic influences. The electronic elements are incredibly tasteful and subtle, as Ragsdale manages to create in his songs big and powerful sounds without them feeling overcrowded. The combination of Ragsdale galactic sonic elements and romantic lyrical content is breathtaking, as the quality of poetry is in par with the quality of composition and the production, creating a truly impeccable body of work.
One of my favourite things about ‘Moon, Part One’ is Ragsdale’s intelligent dynamic choices, letting the eleven tracks flow from one to another effortlessly. All you need to do is press play and fall into forty-two minutes of melancholic bliss.
