I imagine we are all aware of the tragic events unfolding in the Middle East. If one has to take a global approach to the conflict and look at it through a wider lens, it’s obvious how the main issue is the generational violence that seeks revenge on both sides. ‘Dying Son’ is a record that fits that exact message, suggesting a way forward that includes forgiveness and permanent peace.
Penned by London-based group Ooberfuse with Palestinian multi-instrumentalist Charlie Rishmawi and Miguel Khair, the record is a poignant and evocative call for a better future, offering a peaceful hand to their ‘enemies’ – a metaphorical figure calling for a new, neutralized approach to the conflict.
Drenched in a contemporary, eclectic production, ‘Dying Son’ develops over Arabic chants and instrumentation, while empowering stunning and hypnotising female vocals towards a glorious and memorable result. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, Ooberfuse explain: “Through the up-close portrayal of a mother’s grief that is depicted in our lament Dying Son it is possible to discern that hatred has no future and that only love, even love of an enemy, is the pathway to lasting peace.”
