New Light have been busy at work this year! Debuting on new year’s day with an intriguing yet mysterious leftfield piece, ‘…’, the Nottingham-based indie outfit quickly turned their attention to ‘Make Sure I Get Home’, a record that confirmed they are taking things seriously. ‘Same Situations’ is New Light’s latest effort, an uplifting, playful and brilliant slice of dreamy indie-pop extravaganza, along the lines of The 1975, so to speak.
Citing the 80s as a pillar in their references, the British group moves into colourful electronic pop territories with contemporary flair, embracing a charming vocoder on their main lead vocals, and putting guitars in the back room – at least for now. The result is a dancy, colourful and welcoming piece packed with positivity and friendly vibes – exactly what we need in dark times like today.
Although the record’s sonic livery appears controlled and lighthearted, the nuanced lyricism behind the song leaves ample space for a meaningful conversation, with New Light delving into the struggle of having to ‘appear’ on social media, rather than just being yourself. As they explain: “The song is about self-reflection and the struggles of being young in an era of social media”.
