Gary Dranow is not new to delving into socially relevant lyricism. The Park City rocker’s latest effort, ‘Black Coal Lung’, follows the same script, bringing to a wider audience environmental pollution issues and the need for social justice. In particular, the record focuses on amplifying the story of “a small town in Ohio plagued by the toxic emissions of a nearby coal power plant, leading to devastating health consequences for its residents”.
Well, that’s Gary Dranow standing for the little man, championing a small town in the face of global climate and pollution changes. The music counterpoint to such an important theme is quite perfect. Built over slow-burn ballad stylings, ‘Black Coal Lung’ features folk and Americana qualities, including a charming harmonica which makes the track incredibly nostalgic.
Overall, a fantastic offering. As usual, Dranow bring The Manic Emotions with him, a group of long-time collaborators including Chris Zoupa, Jason Jones and Roman Burda.
