It’s the first time I have heard about a tribute band pivoting to original work. That’s a silver lining, is it? That’s exactly the case for York-based outfit One Iota. Originally a Beatles tribute group, the four British musicians experimented with their own sound during the pandemic, arriving to publish an album recorded at Abbey Road Studios, ‘More Than You Take’.
Now, One Iota return after a short hiatus, sharing a single that feels more modern and contemporary, yet drenched in tradition. Rather than sticking to 60s-inspired vocal harmonies and surf-rock stylings, the group delves into 70s adult rock with many 80s influences (especially in the final sax solo). Frankly, they have grown massively, especially regarding their songwriting prowess.
‘More Than This’ is exactly that, a catchy and expressive song with an eclectic character and a monumental chorus. Clocking in at just above six minutes, the track is certainly a reminder of past times and will appeal to a mature audience. Although to be fair, good music is good music in any age bracket…
