Like a quirky, uplifting blend of The Black Keys and The Killers, Shining Nothing champion a rather unique artistry, building anthemic and catchy tunes with extreme guitar-powered elegance and a certain softness and veiled poignancy. It all works well, ‘Heavy’ being the strongest evidence of that. In it, the keen listener will be able to appreciate the many nuances in the band’s timeless sound, ranging from fuzzy guitars to crooner-like vocals which feel catchy and relatable.
We’d also recommend not to overthink the record. ‘Heavy’ stands on its own charisma, offering a three-minute vibrant journey into recognizable references and meaningful imagery. Hailing from Chicago, Shining Nothing flourishes on classic American rock, as it does on Dylan-Esque folk stylings and surf-pop remembrance. It is this very eclectic formula which informs the group’s work so intensively.
Speaking about the inspiration behind their latest single, Shining Nothing explain: “It delves into emptiness in a positive way, as if surfing on an inflatable mattress”. A theme that’s not too far from our current reality…
