We have thoroughly enjoyed ‘Immortal Jellyfish’. In a way, it took us back to the glorious era of prog rock, in the 70s, with bands indulging in classical-flavoured, tricky and long arrangements. The record in this case is bold and daring, a journey through dissonance, solos and general eclecticism, with a healthy dose of orchestral textures and soundscapes. It all showcases Herman Martinez’s musical prowess, both in compositional and technical terms.
Hailing from Atlanta, the American musician crafts a decisively long and nuanced record, packing eighteen nostalgic gems spacing genres such as prog-rock, psychedelia and art-rock. The result is a slice of timeless extravaganza, allowing the listener to escape the daily grind and find refuge in Martinez’s colourful world, drenched in colossal, cinematic vibes but also gritty tones, guitar-powered fierceness and lyrical poignancy.
Notably, all instruments have been recorded by Herman herself, quite impressive! Seeing the level of musicianship in it, we can only imagine the wealth of musical knowledge possessed by Martinez. Speaking about the album, he explains: “These songs are living things using us to hear themselves. It’s here to pull the music from the rocks and trees and smudge the silence. Listen and age in all directions at once”.
