It’s a welcome return to distorted tones for Teddy Clarke. Following up on ‘Lighter Fluid’, the British artist embraces his indie rock aura once again, using it to express anger and frustration for the country’s current political landscape, in ‘Rethink’. Inspired by Rishi Sunak’s shocking stance on trans rights, Clarke uses his art as a rebellious outlet, matching sharp lyricism with fuzzy tones, fast-paced drums a tapestry of gentle textures.
It’s perhaps a return to the project’s original sound livery, after a few eclectic and misty releases. We appreciate it – it’s in this very same territory that Teddy seems to flourish, his charisma and confidence being supercharged and shown to a wider audience. The London songster’s clear and dynamic vocals are also a joy to listen to.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, Clarke explains: “I’d been in a bit of a rut, and hadn’t been writing anything I was feeling particularly connected with. But as soon as I saw/heard the transphobic comments Rishi Sunak was making I instantly felt compelled to write, and the song kind of wrote itself pretty quickly.”
