Described by the artist as “an electropop album for a nighttime drive,” ‘The Absolute State of the Absolute State is Monti Korbelle’s fifth solo record. The Pittsburgh-based singer/songwriter and producer is known for his genre-bending approach to music making, and his latest album makes no exceptions. Taking listeners on an intensely innovative and synth-filled journey, it is the culmination of a full year’s worth of sweat and tears from Monti. What I can say for certain, however, is that it’s been well worth the wait!
‘Going In’ begins proceedings, and it’s essentially a reimagined electropop version of Monti’s ambient tune ‘But Waves Pull Me In’. The perfect start! A trippy and kaleidoscopic ‘Fervent Citizen’ then follows, before the rather strange ‘Tiffany’s Car’ steps up to the plate.
‘Pulling Me Under’ goes as hard as any track on the album, before ‘A Girl Named Zara’ sucks you into a dreamy hip-hop atmosphere that is simply hypnotising.
With eleven songs still left to discover, ‘The Absolute State of the Absolute State’ is a record unlike any I’ve heard in quite some time. At over one hour long, it needs to be absorbed and soaked in…given time and care. Should you be up to the challenge, I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed!
