The keen reader will be already familiar with SERENA, London-based songstress with a knack for playful dark pop and luscious, bold lyricism. Writing about ‘Lipstick on a glass’ last year, we proudly declared it “a sultry slice of retro-flavoured electro-pop”, effectively entering alt-pop territories in fierce eclectic fashion. Now, SERENA revisits that very same single, getting help from fellow sonic alchemist Cholly.
The result is a hypnotising, fast-paced remix version, built on glitchy sound design and hyper-pop-esque, bright textures. A dive into leftfield territories and unconventional arrangements, ‘Lipstick on a glass (Cholly’s Version)’ welcomes its brand-new livery with surprising ease: perhaps that’s due to SERENA’s malleable vocal tone, capable of perfectly fitting into such kaleidoscopic and alternative settings.
Speaking about the collaborations with Cholly, she explains: “A few years ago, while performing at a festival in London, I had the opportunity to witness Cholly’s mesmerising performance. As a solo artist myself, I deeply appreciate the dedication required to craft an electronic set, and seeing another female artist owning the stage was incredibly empowering. I knew right then that we had to collaborate someday!”
