Bad Hints Shares Intense and Cathartic EP ‘Pure/Show’

Jokingly, Bad Hints lets us know she “pretends to play the Moog”. Judging from what we heard, she’s definitely not pretending to make good music. ‘Pure/Show’ is the project’s latest effort, a highly engaging and solemn slice of alt-pop extravaganza, all drenched in a distant folk character and dark, deep production colours. Introduced by ‘Pure Gold’, the two-track EP instantly showcases its quality, accompanying the listeners through an evocative and gloomy journey into human experience and intricate personalities.

There’s a precise sonic profile common to this record; the instrumental focuses on the lower end of the frequency spectrum, delivering this massively dystopian mass of bass matter, in turn leaving ample room for the American songstress’ enchanting vocals to resonate at their best. Wrapped in a big reverb, they make for a peculiar final result, quite cathartic and soothing, yet intense and melancholic.

‘Pretty Show’ is certainly the most friendly episode in the EP, boasting a more upbeat and indie-flavoured identity. In terms of catchiness, the song’s chorus is playful and anthemic, something that complements well its previous darker counterpart.
