It took us a while to grasp the extent of They Travel at Night’s artistry. The project is inherently eclectic, exploring indie pop stylings next to post-rock elements, all drenched in spacious vocals and a decisively left-filed character. Perhaps this quirky, unique identity is what makes ‘Entropy’ such a great record: simply, the project pursues its own path, leaving proven formulas and viral trends to others.
‘Entropy’ centres around personal expression, and as such, it does a great job of communicating They Travel at Night’s wide references. Empowered by Lou and Chuck, the humans behind the project, the group bathes in dreamy nostalgia, fuzzy synth tones and crackling, filtered grooves, wrapping the listeners in bright and liquid sonic goo while offering meaningful lyricism and personal experiences.
Based in Detroit, the duo has its roots in a lifetime of friendship; militancy in past bands helps them to take a more sapient approach today, as it’s the case with ‘Entropy’. Our favourite moment in the EP is ‘Into It’, reminding us of M83 and the wider shoegaze scene. If looking for experimental vibes, ‘Fare Thee Well’ is bound to surprise you positively.
