Citing the likes of Rush, R.E.M., U2, and Elliott Smith as his primary influences, Memphis-based singer/songwriter McNeil Johnwood is a fresh new face in the music scene. At the age of fifty-nine, the artist has just released his two debut singles, and both underscore the inventiveness and range of his artistry. Working alongside the celebrated producer Calvin Lauber, (Paramore, boygenius, Julien Baker) Johnwood crafts two tracks that hint at the enormous potential of his burgeoning musical career.
‘Scarecrow’ steps up to the plate first, a dark and ominous piece that features a layered banjo and hauntingly spectacular female vocal harmonies. Aimed directly at Donald Trump, it’s an alternative rock banger with an important message. “I am independent, but that man is a scarecrow,” says McNeil. “He’s not who he says he is”.
We are then introduced to ‘Magical’, a tune that stands in stark sonic contrast to its predecessor. A sweet, heartfelt, and folky love song about the first time Johnwood saw his wife, ‘Magical’ slowly builds itself up before reaching a guitar-crunching and forceful crescendo. It’s pure brilliance and, with each new listen, you pick up hidden nuances and details that just enrich ‘Magical’ even further!
