Somewhere in a basement far, far away, Grave Return crushed down into Earth’s core, switched on their amplifiers, and performed their latest single, ‘TV Prophets’, live for the lucky six who dared show up. Only those who could hold their breath for the three-minute duration could enter, as catching a breath throughout the performance was a laughable idea.
“A cornerstone of the Orlando punk scene”, the band encapsulates the notorious rugged underground punk sound of the 90s, the era in which, if given a time machine, the DIY musicians of today would travel back to – the Mecca of punk. Grave Return released this track under the label, DCxPC, which solely releases live albums.
The audio opens with an introduction from the lead singer, and this caught my full attention for two reasons: Firstly, his unapologetic, boisterous attitude tore down my morning wall of happiness where I woke up thinking “everything is great!”, and the sun shining through the window did not help this contrast either. Not one bit. Secondly, the audio is raw and honest. I always seek this in the music I listen to; when I find it, I am taken by surprise.
The introduction lays the foundation for the rage throughout the track. Exploding drum fills, husky vocals, and energetic guitars combine to form this robust piece of live recording. For a live performance, the instruments are all incredibly in sync, and with various high-speed tempo changes, any artist should be somewhat jealous of this musicianship.
