Slowly finding his feet on the Australian music scene, FLOW PHNX captures our attention with a single that’s intense, emotional and relatable. Capitalizing on the modern obsession with hip-hop mixed in emo and rock flavourings, the Adelaide-based talent pens a meaningful song that’s fragile yet hard-hitting at the same time, ‘Reverse’. The single’s gritty and fuzzy instrumental works well with FLOW PHNX’s charismatic vocals, delivering a tale of broken relationships and internal struggles that’s pretty common nowadays.
Sonically, we are confronted by a bouncy, traditional trap beat interlaced with poppier driving rhythms, creating a sort of push and pull between sections that could perhaps serve as a metaphor for the track’s conflicting lyricism, mirroring the complexity of human emotions. Clocking at a relatively short length – just under three minutes – ‘Reverse’ finds a witty way to say farewell, by switching to a minimal, ethereal outro section which feels lo-fi and grainy, yet very engaging and enchanting.
Crowning it all, we find FLOW PHNX’s controlled and expressive flow, particularly empowered by his sharp and malleable tone. Wrapping the listeners into a colourful yet melancholic universe, ‘Reverse’ is the perfect entry point to the young Aussie talent’s artistic universe.
