This is a record for the hardcore and punk purists. You see, among a music landscape that’s moving towards ultra-polished records, Storm Boy still manage to provide that pure, unfiltered artistic feeling, resembling the best late ‘90s punk and garage stylings with modern flair. ‘With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky’ is the American band’s latest record, a fierce punch to the guts, a sharp cut in your middle finger.
Delivered through fuzzy and sleazy guitar tones, chaotic vocals and euphoric drum grooves, the EP would revive even the most apathetic of listeners, with its bold and unapologetic sonic character and a variety of lyrical themes that never feel tiring. In fact, there’s a whole lot of personal storytelling in it, with Storm Boy using real-life experiences and anthemic figures to supercharge their breaking force.
Described as ‘connected by the time of time and mortality’ by the Washington State-based group, ‘With a Gasp that Reached to the Sky’ might not appear to everyone’s palate, but if one is just a little bit into music (as we are), there’s no doubt they’ll be able to appreciate the effort and nuanced artistry that went into the project.
