This is a record that’s probably more aimed at historical research. For us, it’s quite special, as it gives us a glimpse into a past, lost era while highlighting a talented band that didn’t quite make it into the limelight, but that sure as hell had the ability to do so. ‘Cornered and Shot’ is not just an album’ it’s first and foremost a celebrative release, aimed at remembering the fuzzy, intense and rebellious grunge and post-rock goodness of Sparks Fly From a Kiss.
Hailing from New Jersey, the talented outfit was formed by Ralph Nicastro, John Simek, Jesse Rudner, Gregg Levy, and Stephen Bigelis. Simek had the pleasure of restoring and mastering the old tapes, originally recorded between 2001 and 2002. More than twenty years later, ‘Cornered and Shot’ makes sure we can appreciate the group’s luscious, eclectic and distortion-rich material while offering a throwback to late 90s and early ‘2000 rock stylings.
The balance between lyrical content and psychedelic riffs is striking, with Sparks Fly From a Kiss jumping from spacious and sleazy guitar tones to catchy vocal melodies and witty storytelling. Certainly an interesting album! While the group is not active anymore, some of its old band members can be now found at other projects (such @thecleancrimescene and @santropezband).
