We’ll admit it; we briefly lost ourselves when listening to ‘Mr. Who Knows When’. How could we not? Such a fragile, soothing and heartwarming tune is the perfect artistic background for deep introspection and nostalgic memories. It’s the end of the year, and everyone’s busy judging their accomplishments, laying out plans for the next one; Polly Green seeks to instead offer a slice of calmness, an invite to acceptance and self-healing. In an increasingly chaotic society, she’s a breath of fresh air, a welcome refuge from the hardship of life.
Incredibly elegant and nuanced, ‘Mr. Who Knows When’ builds its sonic identity on evocative and intimate piano arpeggios and orchestral elements, perfectly fitting the Christmas-fuelled warmth and kindness. Crowning it all, we find Polly Green’s heart-shaking, majestic vocals, treating us all to a slice of blessed cathartic energy.
Delving into the inspiration behind the piece, she explains: “Love, heartbreak and nostalgic memories are universal things I long to hear in songs and are difficult to capture in an original way where the dissonant crunch of harmonies mirror the same anguish and poignance – I hope to create a portal through my music to reflect other people’s problems where they can recognise themselves and maybe reach some consolation or even resolution.”
