It doesn’t happen every day to be able to write about such an eclectic and virtuoso piece. ‘Something New’ channels the best funk and acid jazz around giving it a modern outlook while honouring tradition. Taking a page out of the Tower of Power (but also Incognito) user manual – so to speak – Dutch drummer, composer and creative Hans-Peter de Zeeuw a.k.a d’Z shares a slice of uplifting energy and playful charm, giving us something different than the usual fashion-pop material.
Boasting immense technical prowess, d’Z builds a stunning band around him: guitars, Hammond organ and a horn section, all working together to form a tight and groovy musical goo, the perfect setting for soulful vocal melodies and jazz-flavoured delivery. Honestly, it’s a very welcome throwback.
Of course, such a high-level composition doesn’t just emerge out of the blue. Rather, it’s the current point of arrival of d’Z’s prestigious career, a path that made him one of the most recognized drummers in the Netherlands. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, he explains: “Something New’ is a passionate statement about celebrating life to the fullest. With an irresistible funky vibe, it’s an invitation to re-think and start all over again. The world is a mess right now, so she needs all the hope and positivity she can get.”
