A charming, fierce and decisively retro offering, ‘Trees’ is the kind of song that flourishes on its charming attitude and edgy stylings, wrapping the listener into gooey, edgy goodness and lyrical absorption. Built over a traditional pop-rock formula, the single echoes the analogue sound of the late ‘70s, comprised of playful fuzziness and uplifting energy. We appreciate it: today’s industry makes ultra-polished records its primary feature, and it’s good to see some lone hero break that pattern.
Hailing from North England, Jack Simpson is exactly that, an honest, authentic and solitary creative, taking his artistry wherever he feels comfortable. ‘Trees’ signals his return on the scenes, following up from his 2020’s EP ‘Jack Simpson Has Got The Lockdown Blues’.
The British talent has been dealing with music for decades, and it shows: his vocals are incredibly evocative and dynamic, moving ahead with raw character and flirtatious attitude. It all works well with ‘Trees’, given its tongue-in-cheek lyricism. As Simpson explains: “‘Trees’ is about people who walk through the park but are too busy to notice the nature around them. Nature is symbolised by the trees.”
